If you want to know how hard you are working, look at the results you are getting.  Many people tell me they are working 10 hours a day, yet have no results.   Many tell me they have tried everything, and still have no income.   Some people are starting to see a little business coming in, but nothing like the amount of effort they are putting out.   It is a common complaint, you are not seeing results in equal to the action you are doing.  People ask me all the time, how I have been able to do so much, so fast.

I want to share with you how you can start having compounding effects of action in your business.

Let’s pretend you wanted a garden.   If you were planting tomato seeds,  you would not grow corn.   But that is exactly what you are doing.  You are trying to grow one thing, yet you are getting another.  In fact, many of you are not even getting the seeds into the soil, or when you do, you never water the seeds.   There is a process to grow a business, the same as growing a garden.

First is the soil, the same in your business.  You must make sure you are open to receiving business.  I find many people are not even open to learning, growing and investing into the opportunity they have chosen.  So even though they may put the seeds in the ground and water every day, nothing is happening.   The soil was not ready.   What this means is you must attend training to learn about your business, and you must then implement.  You can not go buy a big bag of soil, and mulch and all the necessary nutrients to put in the ground, then just leave it sitting in the bag.  You actually have to put it in the ground and prepare the soil.   You must educate yourself, you must attend training, you must learn the exact skill that you need to grow your business.   This is not mindset, or motivation training, you cannot just tell the plants to grow, and speak positive words over the land and think it will magically sprout plants.  You must actually do the hard work.   This is actually picking up the shovel, adding the ingredients and doing the work.  In your business, you get a skill, you implement the skill, and sometimes it is going to be hard and challenging, but you keep doing it, until the soil is ready.  You know this is you, if you are still finding reasons why you cannot talk to people.   You have an excuse that you have not learned how to do something yet, so you are avoiding planting the seeds.  This is your business if you are waiting for the right time, or for the next step.  You cannot wait on anything, you need to just finish digging the soil and start planting the seeds.   You can tell yourself positive things all day long, which is great, but make sure you are planting while you say the affirmations to get to the next level.

Once the soil is ready, you are going to plant some seeds.  What do you want to grow?  If you currently have cucumbers but you wanted zucchini, you planted the wrong seeds.   You must know what kind of clients you want to work with.  If you have a bunch of cucumbers,  you have been planting the wrong seeds.  Where do zucchini seeds hang out?  Have you defined what type of zucchini?  How big will they grow?  and how many plants do you need to meet your zucchini needs?   In your business, you need to know the exact type of client you want, where they hang out,  what are they looking for, and how many exactly you need to reach your goal.   Without this information, you might as well be growing pumpkins.  Maybe you are starting to think, this is why some of my clients are pumpkins!!  (Just kidding!)  You know this is you, if you are working hard, getting clients or have a ton of prospects, but no one really is buying anything.  You are sharing your products, services, and more, yet you keep getting no results.   It is time for you to define your market.  Who needs your product, why do they need it, how is it going to help their life.   Tell yourself who you are helping and how you are helping them.  Where do those people who need your help hang out.  Now go and help them! (Note: Do not use your company presentation which is generic, define  your own story to help your target market)

So now what…. you have planted the seeds,  and you want to grow some zucchini.  You now need to make these seeds grow and thrive.  Does a seed grow the first day you plant it?  Do you just drop it in the ground and keep dumping water on it hoping it will grow today?  Maybe, you put so much water on it, you kill it before it had a chance.   Or maybe you plant the seeds and ignore it and come back a few weeks later and can’t figure out why it has not grown into the plant you expected.  The ground might even be covered in weeds by this point.   This is what you are doing in your business.  You go out and find great prospects, but then just like dumping gallons of water on the seed, you dump information all over this great person you met.  You overkill them in the first five minutes.  Maybe you are the opposite,  you get a business card, or some information, then you never contact them and talk about your business.  Then a few weeks later, you might send an email and say hello, again never mentioning what you do.  The next time you see that awesome prospect, they tell you about what they just bought from your competition, not even realizing what you did.

Even if you have made it this far, and many of you are getting this far, you have really done the hard work.  Prepared the soil, planted the seeds, and started watering.   You even pull the weeds on occasion.  But there is no consistency.  Sometimes you water when you remember,  some days you feel like weeding, and other times, you just walk by and look at the garden. Do you ever tell yourself you will do it later today?   Some people are really good, and they might even schedule watering, weeding and all the rest into their daily planner, but you know how it goes, sometimes things just come up, and life gets busy.  This step may be the most important…. you must water and weed. Of course, do not forget some sun also.   You must do this consistently.  All success happens with a process of doing something again and again.  Sometimes success may seem boring to get the result, but it is the daily action that will bring the best results. Is this you?  Is there no consistency in your business.   I can relate, this was my challenge for a long time, with 4 kids, I worked hard and went in circles.  I could not figure out why I was not getting results.  I was not consistent with growing and communicating with my list.  This one secret, grow your list, and communicate consistently, will grow a business bigger than any garden you can imagine.

Is it starting to make sense now why you are not getting results in your business?

I want to share one more type of person.  This one is the most common.  They are being consistent, in fact they are working in the garden everyday.   Yet, they cant figure out why nothing is growing.  I talk with this type of business owner the most, because they feel the most struggle and pain, and want results so badly.   I can help this type the most, but you must be open. The challenge is that this type of business owner  is not usually open to listen to the idea of changing.  That is what breaks my heart the most.

This person is in the garden,  they went  bought the seeds,  got the shovel, and went in the yard and started digging.  Today they worked hard digging, yesterday they organized all the seeds,  before that they studied the right combination of nutrients to put in the soil.  In fact if you talked with this person, they could tell you all about gardening,  they could tell you why certain seeds work, why you need a special mulch and exactly what time of day and month to plant the correct seeds.   Everyday,  they work so hard,  working on the soil, counting the seeds,  figuring out the right place, the right time of day, and the right amount of sun and water.  Yet they are not planting any seeds, and they are not growing anything.   You could recognize  if you feel you are working really hard, yet you have no leads.  If I ask how large is your list, and you do not have a list, this might be you.  You are gardening all day, but not planting any seeds.  Even if you have a few seeds, and none are growing.  You would know this is you if you are not doing any presentations. Maybe you do not even know how to sell your product, you know all the ingredients and details, but do not know how to sell it to someone else.

Ask yourself are working your business everyday, and not getting results.

This one is the easiest to fix, because you already have a great work ethic and willing to work hard on your business.  You must track and change your activities.  Your first focus needs to be that it is finally time to plant the seeds.  Stop worry about the perfect soil and making sure you have things in place.  Immediately, you must  start list building.  You must try different list building activities and track the results.  Both online and offline. You must have 5-7 ways to get leads into your list.  These 5-7 ways must result in leads, or after 2 weeks, you try a new way, you keep doing this until you have developed a consistent plan of leads coming into your list.  You must also be open to learning new list building, and implement what you learn.  Each and everyday, you must track your work with how many new prospects you got that day, and then track how you are consistently reaching those prospects, and how you are getting them to your sales presentation.    The formula is as simple as gardening.

Now is your chance to grow the garden of your choice, as big as you want, with the type of seeds you choose.   It is up to you….  you must now decide it is your time to grow.

Tell me how a Heineken commercial
can help you in business

 

Today I was talking with Ryan Doktorczyk, a real estate broker and Monavie consultant, his business is growing rapidly even during times when the economy is slow. How is he doing this?  Is it possible he knows a secret that others have not discovered? Strange, but he mentioned this Heineken commercial.  Even stranger,  when I walked in my house, this exact commercial was playing on the TV. I stopped this time to listen to the words, it made me think…. this commercial really relates to business and life.

Originally this commercial used the word "prey", but has since changed to say "prize". Either phrase still relates.

Your business is in the jungle. Have you figured out who is your Target Market (your prize)? Would you even know your prize if you saw it? When I ask business owners who is your Target Market, the number one response I get is, "Everyone".  WRONG ANSWER!!   As in the video, are you interested in everyone at the wedding? or do you have your eye on a prize? He knew the prize when he saw her. 

So I ask,  who is your ideal client? I keep preaching, "NOW is the time to start or expand a business!"

Many of the small business owners I am working with were employees just a few years ago.  Many of the entrepreneurs liked being employed.  They were content with a JOB and had not considered being in a business.  Some of them had started a Home Based Business while working, it was not to make extra money, but it was just because they enjoyed a product.  Many had started in Direct Sales or Network Marketing.  It was just a way to get a discount, and possibly make a few hundred dollars.  They had no idea that the economy would turn and receiveing unemployment would not pay the bills.

There is also many people I have met who are like those in this video.  Spent many years working, lost a job, and after years of trying to find employment, they have no choice, but must start a business.  The unemployment has run out, and in order to survive they must find a way to make some cash quickly. Money is usually the motivator and many new entrepreneurs are scared and unsure of what to do, but they just know they need money quickly.

My business was born out of my need for income after my Real Estate slowed down, and my husband's construction business was disappearing.  With no income for months, we had no choice but to reinvent ourselves and come up with solutions.  At the time we had 3 kids and one on the way.  I am so Thankful we forced ourselves to step up our business and use the system I now teach others.  I want to help you get out of the unemployment trap, away from the fear the government is putting on you, and I want you to know there is hope.

I just wanted to share an article I was reading from Joel Comm.  This as a typical experience that I hear about from online marketers who also are in network marketing.  It is something to be aware of before joining or endorsing any company.  Make sure to research and understand any company policies and procedures, before paying any fees.   I have heard a similar stories from over a dozen different people, so this is not unique, in fact it more common than the stories of those who reach success with their combination of online marketing and branded website.  So this is not meant as a review of Arbonne, Tupperware, Melaleuca or any other network marketing company.  It is just general review of the industry.

When I first got on the internet in 1999, I built my first one page with HTML.  It was simple and today would be called a "squeeze" page or "capture" page.  I got hundreds of leads and was surprised how easy and it was to build my business.  I was with Melaleuca at the time.  My page did not even say the company name, products or anything about what I was promoting.  Yet, when over 80 people joined me in a few months, the company got suspicious and realized I was marketing on the internet.  Each lead I personally called after capturing their information.  Yet, the company said there was no online advertising or marketing and in the end, I lost my business.  This is when I swore I would never again join a Network Marketing opportunity, in fact, I thought all network marketing companies were a scam.  I had a negative attitude towards everyone and everything to do with the industry.  I just did not realize, it was not the company, in fact Melaleuca has great products, I miss many of the products I enjoyed while I was with them.  It was not the industry, the industry is the best way to have freedom of time and money, I have not seen millionaires in any other opportunity who create such wealth.  What was the problem was that so many people still did not understand the power of the internet, and still to this day many companies still do not know the power the internet holds to create this wealth.   When I was looking for a company, I found several that promote and know the internet is a just a tool, and allows with certain guidelines internet promotion.  This was important to me because of my past and the stories like these that I hear. I never want anyone to leave a business they are in, there are ways to use the internet as a tool. Realize, there are ways to promote online without ever saying a company name or product/service, but that is for many of my training programs.  So if you are already with a company, stay with it, I can help you advertise and get leads online.  Unfortunately, you may be limited to any products you can sell online.

To Arbonne or Not to Arbonne

It is true. I am an Arbonne consultant. (Actually, that may be past-tense by the time you read this…)

For those unfamiliar with Arbonne, they are a fast-growing company focused on health care and skin care products. They claim the products are all natural and most of the people who try them truly love them. The downside is that they are ridiculously expensive. Still, you get what you pay for. For the record, I have several friends in Arbonne and they are good people with a high level of integrity. Nothing I have to say should be construed as inpugning them in any way.

I signed up as an Arbonne consultant on the recommendation of a friend. It's basically a multi-level marketing deal where you are supposed to tap your warm market, teach them the business, help them get rich, etc… It's nice when the product isn't Amway, but the marketing plan is essentially the same.

Before I signed up, I did a little research online. I wanted to see if anyone was successfully marketing Arbonne online. Naturally, there is a corporate web site. But I also encountered several sites created by independent consultants. There were only a few, but they were pretty good as far as content and design. Having a good deal of Internet knowledge, I figured I could do likewise.

So, I signed up and purchased a "myarbonne" site, which would essentially give me a place for my customers to buy product online. Since I had no intent of bringing my family or friends into a multi-level marketing organization (It's the absolute fastest way to alienate family and lose friends), I would be doing all my selling and recruiting online. Well, the recruiting was actually going to be done by a person in my upline, but I'll get to that in a moment.

I paid the obligatory signup fees and, of course, you are expected to purchase product, not for inventory purposes but for your own use. While I do know of some men who enjoy the products, I figured I would let Mary try the Nutrimin-C anti-aging formulas. She liked them a lot, so I purchased enough for her to have a lasting supply.

For an annual fee of $120, you get your own MyArbonne.com site. This was the first red flag for me. Instead of rolling the costs of hosting a few pages into the signup fee, I hit my first "gotcha". I know what web hosting costs and I realize that if someone wants to promote a site that is going to make me money, I don't charge them for space. But this is a way for Arbonne to monetize the consultant. I bit the bullet and paid the fee to register my own Arbonne site.

Next, I encountered Arbonne's search engine submission service. Essentially, they charge $39/year to submit your myarbonne.com site to a list of search engines and directories. This service is a MASSIVE rip off and entirely worthless to the consultant. I suspect Arbonne, Inc. gets a kickback from the company that does the directory submissions for them, because there is no benefit to the consultant. How can I say this?

Here is all you need to know about search engines and directories:

Google
Yahoo
MSN
AOL
HotBot
Lycos
DMOZ

End of story. The rest of the directories and search engines on their list are virtually worthless, netting almost zero traffic for the dollars spent.

Out of these listed, most are created by "spidering" your site, looking for original content, and especially content that changes on a regular basis. It is extremely RARE for subdomain sites to be successfully listed in these places as they deliberately block the majority of them. Why? Because they know that there are going to be hundreds or thousands of people all trying to submit the same blasted content. This clogs the search engines and makes them less valuable to the end consumer. Long story short? Submit your sites to the search engines and directories yourself. It will take about 30 minutes at the most and give you the same benefit.

In order to maximize my Arbonne site traffic, I put together a plan to implement several web strategies.

First, I decided to register a domain, www.fantasticskincare.com I knew Arbonne would not allow their brand name in a url, so I thought this would be fine. After all, I found several other sites that were doing the same thing, and the manager in my upline assured me that it would be alright. I put several hours into building a nice site and was quite pleased with the product.

Next, I choose to leverage my shopping site, www.dealofday.com, by creating an Arbonne category in which I would display my Arbonne special offers and sales. The visitors to my site would be able to easily find product and a link to the myarbonne.com site.

In order to facilitate recruiting, I opted to give away a free sample of the Nutrimin-C RE9 formula to those who signed up for it on my site. I think I processed 150 requests and passed those on to my upline to follow up with. I guess people online just want freebies, because we were unable to make even one sale, let alone sign up a new consultant. So much for a product that "sells itself". I think the price point is just too high for the average person. Talk about sticker shock! Anyhow, my manager tried her best. It just didn't work out.

In the meantime, I had been running my independent site and promoting on DealofDay.com for a few weeks, when lo and behold, I received a notice from Arbonne's legal representative. He/she (can't recall, don't care) informed me that I was in violation of Arbonne's terms of service, both by having my own web site AND by promoting Arbonne products on my shopping site. I thought there must be some mistake. After all, others were doing it and my upline assured me it would be fine.

As it turns out, they no longer allow people to develop their own sites OR promote on any site OTHER than the MyArbonne.com site to sell product. I recall having a lengthy, and extremely frustrating, conversation with some gentleman in their office. Yes, it is paraphrased, but it went a little something like this.

Joel: Let me get this straight. I have bought a web site site to sell Arbonne product online, but I can't promote my business online.

Arbonne: You can put your URL for your MyArbonne.com site on your business cards.

Joel: But I can't promote an Internet site on the Internet?

Arbonne: That is correct.

Joel: That is insane. So how do you explain the consultants out there that DO have an Internet presence? I have encountered no less than three sites that have good seach engine rankings and pleasant design, with the purpose of promoting their Arbonne business and selling products.

Arbonne: They built their sites before we instated this policy, so they were grandfathered in.

Joel: Ah, so those who signed up early have an unfair advantage?

Arbonne: We don't see it that way. We are trying to protect our brand.

Joel: I see. So why not have your team review individual web sites and approve them if they meet your standards?

Arbonne: That would take too much work. We don't have the staff to handle it.

Joel: So it is just easier to discourage innovation and creativity, stifling the people who can take your Internet presence to the next level?

Arbonne: We are primarily an offline business, designed for one-on-one face-to-face encounters with the client. The web site is there to tell your clients about so they can easily purchase product from your site online.

Joel: So why are you encouraging people to pay $39 to submit their myarbonne.com sites to directories and search engines if they aren't supposed to be working their business online?

At this point, Mr. Arbonne got a bit flustered and I had had enough. Clearly, these people really don't have it together regarding their Internet model. Ultimately, its no skin off my back. I take risks like this on a regular basis. I flushed a couple hundred dollars down the tube and my wife got some face cream that she really likes. All in all, not a bad deal. I guess its just the backwards thinking that makes me nuts. Companies that crush creativity and innovative thinking have no business being online. It's not that I mind obstacles to success. It just hacks me off a bit when those obstacles are placed there by the company I am atttempting to succeed with.

So, I removed my Arbonne links from DealofDay.com. I took the product off the site I had created. But I left a redirect at FantasticSkinCare.com for people to get to shopping.myarbonne.com.

Today, I get another email from my friends at Arbonne legal telling me that I am in violation by having any links on any site. I encountered similar problems in dealing with Tupperware, but my Arbonne experience was more maddening. It's a good thing their product is good.

One of the major complaints I hear from small business owners is they just do not have the time to get it all done. They have to do marketing, sales, projects, hiring, paperwork and of course the trade. There is just not enough hours in the day to accomplish all the task.

Usually when I meet and work directly with a business owner the first thing I want to help with is a simple marketing plan. This would include finding the "Target Market", then putting together 5 or more ways to get in front of that market. The next step would be to capture all the leads and find a way to turn those leads into prospects. Following that would be a communication system to stay in front of those prospects until you have a sale or referral.

This "funnel" sometimes sounds easier said than done. Yes it is a simple sales funnel, but overwhelming for most small business owners and that is why they struggle.
